Psychological Treatment for Addictions

Addiction harms everyone and everything dear to you, and sometimes it seems that without it you have nothing, that there's no future without it. But above all, it harms you. The pain is yours. The distress is yours, and the possibility of seeking treatment is yours. You may have already tried many times to stop. Alone or with support. This is part of the journey, and this is part of the difficulty we will address in treatment.

Treatment for Addictions

I'm not here to judge you, I'm not here to force you, I'm here to walk the path with you. In treatment, we'll understand what lies at the foundation of the addiction, why it developed, how it's connected to the need for control, and how it expresses a desire to escape from something that hurt us in the past. In treatment, we'll also explore how you view your life, what's important to you, and how you can build a life that supports your goals.

The path to recovery from addiction is long and challenging, but it's achievable. The greatest challenge is the persistence and determination of the addicted person to break free and not fall back into the cycle of addiction. When you succeed in breaking the connection with the addictive substance or behavior, you can build a healthier and happier life. Professional treatment, support from your environment, and personal determination are the keys to recovery.

Addictions are divided into several types and categories:

1. Substance Addictions:

  • Alcohol addiction

  • Marijuana and hashish addiction

  • Addiction to party drugs or rave substances such as: MDMA, LSD, MMC, ecstasy, ketamine, and others

  • Addiction to drugs like cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, various powders, and others

  • Addiction to prescription medications such as benzodiazepines and opioids

  • Nicotine/smoking addiction

  • Addiction to other substances such as caffeine, anesthetics, and others

2. Behavioral Addictions:

  • Gambling addiction

  • Sex/pornography addiction

  • Internet addiction

  • Shopping addiction

  • Work addiction

  • Exercise/sports addictions

  • Other behavioral addictions

3. Additional Addictions:

  • Food/drink addictions (bulimia, anorexia)

  • Technology/smartphone addiction

  • Drug/medication addiction for performance enhancement purposes

Every addiction is accompanied by similar patterns of compulsive urges, lack of control, increasing tolerance to the addictive factor, and continued use despite severe damage to health, functioning, and relationships. Treatment for addictions includes similar approaches but with adaptation to the specific type of addiction.

What are the main causes of addiction?

Below are several main factors that may lead to the development of addictions:

Psychological factors - Emotional difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and low self-image may lead to attempts to "calm down" through addictive substances or activities. Addiction can serve as a negative coping mechanism.

Social and environmental factors - Exposure to drug use or addictive behaviors in childhood, social pressure, availability of addictive substances, and cultural influences can encourage addictions.

Psychiatric factors - Addictions are more common among people with mental disorders such as ADHD, antisocial personality disorder, eating disorders, and others.

Trauma or loss - Traumatic experiences in childhood or significant loss can lead to addiction in an attempt to cope with helplessness and pain.

Biological/genetic factors - Genetic factors exist that increase the risk of addiction, partly through influence on reward mechanisms and pleasure experiences in the brain. Family history of addictions is also a risk factor.

Usually, addiction is the result of a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors that lead to established patterns of using addictive substances or behaviors. Awareness of risk factors can help with prevention.

What is the role of the family and the immediate environment in treating addiction?

The Role of Environment and Family in Addiction Recovery

Like any human phenomenon, addiction also occurs within a system and is deeply influenced by the environment, for better or worse.

The environment can provide emotional support, offering a listening ear, caring, understanding, and acceptance for the person with addiction during the recovery process. This is an essential need that creates an encouraging atmosphere and facilitates coping.

Encouragement and motivation enhancement - The family can strengthen motivation for recovery, emphasize the benefits, and help maintain persistence even during difficult times. Encouragement and appreciation are significant.

Active participation in the rehabilitation process is also significant, such as accompanying the person with addiction to treatments, conveying relevant information to therapists, drawing attention to warning signs, and assisting with monitoring. The family can help create a supportive living environment free from addictive triggers to facilitate the recovery process.

It's important to remember that addiction also harms the immediate environment and family, which must address trauma, relationship damage, financial harm, and similar issues for the sake of healing. The family can also learn coping tools, clear boundaries, and better forms of communication with the person with addiction.
